Perhaps you’re familiar with how conventional dentures “fit” on teeth. Generally speaking, they rest on gum tissues and attach to crowned teeth on each side. While traditional methods for replacing missing teeth work for some patients, for those that do not have healthy teeth for dentures to attach to, hopes of having a great smile are dashed. That’s why the idea of implant-supported dentures is exciting, as it’s a cutting-edge solution for patients who have enough bone in their jaw to support dental implants. In this way, dentures are supported by and attached to implants, instead of a patient’s natural teeth.
As one can imagine, the stability of implant-supported dentures far surpasses that of traditional dentures, especially for the lower jaw. What’s more is that they are comfortable and easy to remove for cleaning.
There are two types of implant-supported dentures. Bar-retained dentures represent the first type, and these include a metal bar uniquely designed to fit the shape and curvature of a patient’s jaw. Typically, between two and five dental implants are placed in the jaw. The denture fits over the bar, and is anchored with customized clips or dental accessories. The second type of implant-supported denture is ball-retained, meaning that ball-shaped metal attachments are positioned on each dental implant. The denture contains a socket shape. Thus, the dental implants and dentures lock in place similar to a ball and socket joint.
Perhaps one of the greatest advantages of implant-supported dentures is that they do not need to cover the top palate of a patient’s mouth. Because the denture is attached to dental implants, patients experience ultimate freedom and stability when eating and speaking.
